Irrespective of features Plasma TV sets are still expensive. Top manufacturers have started to bring out lower priced models to temp those of us with a lower budget to turn to plasma but even these can put a big dent in your wallet.

The average 42” Plasma HDTV can set you back around £1000 while you should expect to pay around the £1500 mark for a basic 50” set.

At the same time, more new entrants on the market are coming up with truly affordable plasma displays in an attempt to get their market share. The number of 50-inch cheap plasma TVs from relatively unknown brands selling at under £1,500, is on the increase.

In response to this some of the top manufacturers have brought out a variety of basic Plasma TV models.

42" Plasma's

There are two 42" Plasma TV's available that I would currently recommend. Both are very good value for money but offer some slightly different features:

LG 42PC55 - 42'' Widescreen HD Ready Plasma TV - With Freeview This is a very sleek, black widescreen plasma produced by one of the Top contenders in Plasma TV - LG. It is an amazing quality TV for the price. It is wall mountable, the resolution is excellent for a television in this price range at 1,024 x 768 and it has a HDMI 1080i. At present, only a few plasma HDTV sets can display the full 1080p pixel count so this is an excellent feature to have and one reason why the picture quality on this set is so good. There are also a few little added bonuses like a sleep timer. The one feature this set does miss out on is picture-in-picture but at this price and the fantastic picture quality it delivers I don't think you can really quibble about that. Samsung PS42Q97HDX 42" HD Ready Plamsa TV with Integrated Freeview If you want something with a few more features than the LG 42PC55 this Samsung Plasma is an excellent option. Like the LG above it has fantastic picture quality with a resolution of 1,024 x 768 and it has a HDMI 1080i and has a sleek black finish. This model does have more features; Silhouette Editor refines the face tone and shape of an image. Smart Frame Plus eliminates flickering and Movie Mode provides smoother motion during the fast moving scenes. There is also a game mode to make the most of your games console play, this has received fantastic reviews by users. There are also extra connections so you can fix up your DVD, Games console, Sky and surround sound with no problems.
